Posted on November 06 2015
The Phantom 2 drone from DJI was the second offering from the renowned quadcopter brand, and a true step up from the Phantom 1. The Inspire 1 launched early this year, and was arguably DJI’s most innovative drone at the time. It now competes with the DJI Phantom 3, but still serves as a high-quality drone model, especially in regards to the camera feature. Let’s compare these drones to help you determine the best option for your needs:
Camera and Gimbal
The DJI Phantom 2 does not come with a camera or a gimbal, however it accommodates a Zenmuse H3-2D, H3-3D or H4-3D. It comes with the controller for the Zenmuse H3-2D built into it, though you may also use your own. However, note you can only use the Zenmuse controller with a Zenmuse gimbal.
The camera and gimbal is where the Inspire 1 really shines. It features an integrated 4K video camera and a three-axis, 360-degree rotating gimbal. The camera is capable of shooting video in 4K at 24-30fps, or in 1080p at 24-60fps, as well as 12 megapixel stills. Its lens features nine elements, including an aspherical element, 94⁰ wide-angle FOV, and 1/2.3 inch CMOS sensor. The Inspire 1 is absolutely one of the best drones in regards to video on the market.
The Phantom 2 offers about 25 minutes of flight time, while the DJI Inspire 1 features about 18 minutes of flight time. Both are considered relatively easy to operate, though Amazon reviews concerning the Phantom 2 are a bit mixed. Some praise the quadcopter as a premium quality, stable option, while others say it crashes very easily. How well-versed you are at flying quadcopters certainly comes into play, and the Phantom 2 is easily the better option in regards to flight when compared to the Phantom 1.
