3DR Solo vs. Inspire 1

Posted on November 11 2015

Can’t decide which high-priced drone has your name on it? It’s always helpful to make a list in these situations, such as a list of features you want in a quadcopter. Examples include GPS capability, built-in camera, and longer flight time.

The 3DR Solo from 3D Robotics and the Inspire 1 from DJI are two quality quadcopters offering a plethora of features as well as hefty price tags. If trying to decide between the two and still unsure of what you want, check out the following feature comparisons to help you out:

Camera

While the Solo doesn’t come with a camera, it is easily outfitted for one. Its technology also very much supports camera function, for example 3DR’s 3PV™ (Third Person View) Follow Me technology “turns your Solo into a hands-free aerial camera crew that puts you in the middle of your own adventure. The Solo has designed around the GoPro Hero 3+, 4 and all GoPro drone accessories. The engineers worked closely with GoPro to make sure the units worked seamlessly together.

The DJI Inspire 1, however, is a rock star in regards to built-in drone cameras. Hailed as one of the best quadcopters for video currently on the market, it provides 4K HD video support, a superior gimbal for exceptional stabilization as well as a 360 degree rotating view, and the ability to shoot 12 megapixal cameras. The lens features nine distinct elements, including an aspherical element. The camera also offers 94⁰ wide-angle FOV.

Operation

The Inspire 1 is celebrated for its innovative design that helps make flying easy. “The drone’s transforming arms enable the Inspire 1 to keep the body and the suspended camera up high and protected when the quadcopter is landing, but allow it to drop down and have an uninterrupted line of sight while the drone is flying,” writes a reviewer for Quadcopter HQ.

For the beginner drone enthusiast the 3DR Solo will be an easier machine to fly. The Solo was designed to be flown with both the remote and through a mobile device.

Which is the better option? It might be the Inspire 1 if you are looking for a more professional drone.
