Phantom 2 Vs. Phantom 3 4K Comparison

Posted on January 06 2016

Both the DJI Phantom 2 and DJI Phantom 3 4K are exceptional quadcopters offering a range of fantastic features. Each is capable of capturing amazing footage and images, however a few key differences exist. Let’s examine these differences:

Everything You Need

One of the biggest differences between the Phantom 2 and the Phantom 3 4k is that the latter comes with everything you need to get started whenever you wish. The only thing you need? Your Android or iOS phone. The Phantom 2, in comparison, does not work in conjunction with a mobile device and requires a GoPro Hero 3. However, the Phantom 2 is capable of streaming footage back to your laptop monitor so long as you’re willing to shell out extra cash for the necessary parts.

Camera Comparison

The Phantom 2 requires the aforementioned GoPro Hero 3, and offers a subsequent 118 to 64-degree recording field of view. Image format is JPEG, and image size 12 megapixels. Video recording is 2.7K 30fps, 1080p 60fps, 720p 120fps, and more. The Phantom 3 4k’s onboard camera, in comparison, features a 110 to 85-degree recording field of view, and Adobe DNG Raw, and JPEG image formats. Image size is 14 megapixels, and video recording formats are 1080p 30fps, 1080i 60fps, 720p 60fps.

It Comes Down to Features...and Price

When deciding which Phantom to buy, any reviewer will tell you it comes down to what features you want. The GoPro Hero 3 is arguably the better camera in terms of video, however you may prefer the ability to control your drone from your mobile device. Price also factors in, as the Vision+ is obviously the more expensive option of the two.
