How Often Should I Service My Drone?

Posted on October 29 2015

Wondering how often you should service your drone? This depends on a number of factors. Let’s review these factors to help you get a better idea of how often service is required.

Drone Quality

The first factor in terms of how often you should have your drone serviced is the quality of the quadcopter. A high-end option such as the DJI Phantom 3 or the 3DR Solo from 3D Robotics isn’t going to require constant servicing the way their cheaper counterparts will. If you’re new to drone technology and have never flown one in your life, it’s a good idea to purchase a small, inexpensive option first. You’ll be a lot sadder if you crash a $1,000+ drone as opposed to crashing a $50 drone! However, if you’re well-versed in quadcopter technology and want to make an investment, go with a high-quality quadcopter. It won’t be cheap, but it’s a great thing to have, especially if it serves as a tool to your profession.

Flight Frequency

Another factor in determining how often you should service your drone is how much you fly it. If you fly it “on the reg,” i.e. every day or almost every day, you’re going to need to make certain it’s always running at optimal levels. Check the drone battery, check the propellers, check the get the idea. On the flip side, it’s also a good idea to consider service if you don’t fly your drone very often. A part could break off without you knowing it, or something else could have occurred that results in a crashed quadcopter.

Remember, You Know Best

Whatever else, remember that you know best in terms of how often you should service your drone. You’re the one using it, so take care of it as needed. It’s also a very good idea to review the tech support options and policies of your chosen drone brand so you know how easy it is to obtain assistance.
