How much does a drone cost? Those used for military purposes easily cost millions. Purchasing a personal drone is relatively cheap in comparison, as such quadcopters cost anywhere from $30-$50 to $1,000-$1,500. Unsurprisingly, many factors contribute to a drone’s price. Let’s review a few of these factors to help you determine the best drone for your budget:
The smallest drones are generally the cheapest. Frequently referred to as mini quadcopters, small drones often fit in the palm of your hand. Mostly for indoor use, it’s entirely possible to find a mini drone for $30 to $60. These drones are considered ideal for the drone newbie, as spending a lot on a quadcopter when you have no flight experience and know little about the technology is never recommended. It should also be noted that these drones rarely come with special features, such as a built-in camera or GPS.
Gimbal and Camera
Drones equipped with gimbals or built-in cameras are among the most expensive personal quadcopters. Those featuring gimbals are usually the cheaper of the two, though Zenmuse gimbals are generally more expensive options. For example, the Zenmuse H3-2D Gimbal was created specifically for the GoPro Hero3 camera and includes a number of special features, such as its compatibility with DJI control flight systems.
Quadcopters with built-in cameras are always going to cost more, such as the DJI Phantom 2 Vision+ or the DJI Phantom 3. The Phantom 2 Vision+ averages at about $1,300 when not on sale, while the Phantom 3 Professional costs over $1,500. This price includes things such as an extra battery, and it’s still possible to obtain a version the Phantom 3 for about $1,000.
Additional features that play into the price of a drone include live video streaming/FPV and corresponding apps, advanced remote controls, and GPS/Return to Home features among others.
