Best Drone on the Market?
Posted on December 01 2015
It seems like a new personal drone is popping up (buzzing up?) almost every day, with each new selection appearing to have more features and more possibilities than its predecessor. So how to select the best drone on the market, then?
A tough and very subjective question, the best quadcopter currently available may just be the IRIS+ from 3D Robotics. Honorable mentions go to the 3DR Solo, also from 3D Robotics, as well as DJI masterpieces such as the Phantom 2 Vision+, Phantom 3, and the Inspire 1.
Arguably the best drone for professionals, let’s see what makes the IRIS+ so cool:
Follow Me Technology
In addition to coming ready to fly, the IRIS+ features 3PV™ (Third Person View) Follow Me technology. This technology “turns your IRIS+ into a hands-free aerial camera crew that puts you in the middle of your own adventure.” The quadcopter can “easily follow and film you” so long as you have a GPS-enabled Android device on your person. The result is “sweeping cinematic video” from an awe-inspiring perspective.
Battery and Flight Time
Featuring a 5100 mAh 3S battery, the IRIS+ provides 16 to 22 minutes of flight time “depending on payload.”
DroidPlanner 2 Software
The IRIS+ also comes with free DroidPlanner 2 Software that allows you to plan flights by drawing a path on your Android phone or tablet. Software not only makes it easy to tell the quadcopter where to go, it also ensures your GoPro drone camera “is pointed at the same location via a Region of Interest waypoint” during your entire flight. This makes “autonomous journeys” possible, and provides automatically-stabilized video capture. Wind is always accounted for, as is control of external lights.
It’s important to note that while this drone offers exceptional features, reviews regarding actual operation have been mixed. The decision to purchase the quadcopter therefore comes down to how adept you are with drone technology, and what you need the device for.
