DJI Phantom 3 Radio Range
Posted on December 03 2015
The Phantom 3 from DJI is one of the best drones on the market and offers some of the latest, and arguably the very best in drone technology. The new and improved version comes with its very own app, the DJI Pilot, which makes it easy to control the quadcopter and obtain that coveted bird’s eye view. Consistently reviewed for its outstanding camera, superior remote control, and lightning-quick speed, what is the quadcopter’s radio range like? Let’s check it out:
The Phantom 3’s maximum distance is 6,561 feet. Impressive, no? This is especially astounding when compared to the DJI Phantom 2, which isn’t built for long-range flying. The Phantom 3’s flight time is also longer than the Phantom 2, as it averages at about 23 minutes.
Return to Home Button
In addition to providing excellent radio range, the Phantom 3’s Return to Home button is on point. It may not come back to the exact same spot it launched, but it still comes back. Very important!
“On several occasions (in several different environments) I took it to the very edge of the remote control’s range, and then hit the button. Every time it came back,” writes a reviewer for Gizmodo. “[However], it didn’t always come back exactly to the place where it launched. Usually it landed within a few feet of the spot. Other times it landed about 8 feet away. A couple of time it was closer to 12 or 15 feet. This is exactly why you shouldn’t launch it off a dock (or a boat) unless you really know what you’re doing. That said, once it gets back within range you can just use the joysticks and you’re flying again.”
The DJI Phantom 3 comes in two versions--Advanced and Professional. Both feature hefty price tags, but are worth it if aerial photography is essential to your line of work...or you simply have a thing for expensive toys!
