3DR Solo Review
Posted on December 14 2015
Created by 3D Robotics, the 3DR Solo is an advanced quadcopter offering a variety of features and benefits typical of today’s personal drone, as well as a few extras. The Solo was crafted to compete in the mid-to-upper end of the consumer market.
“We set out a year ago with the promise of not just creating the best drone, but the best overall aerial filmmaking experience imaginable,” the drone’s creators write in its description. “While this meant giving Solo smooth and powerful flight dynamics, it also demanded we make a smarter drone, one that could abstract users from flying so they can focus on getting great video. We know that what you really want is great shots. You want a professional tool that enables you to get those shots easily and consistently, right out of the box. Solo delivers on this promise: You get the shot, every time.”
Let’s review some of the 3DR Solo’s many features; if you’re familiar with the DJI Phantom 3, see how its competition stacks up:
The 3DR Solo features a 14.8 V LiPo 5200 mAh battery. An efficient battery for its weight and size, it works especially well with the quadcopter’s computer-controlled flight system. The battery provides 20 minutes of flight time with a drone GoPro, and 25 minutes of flight time without. The weight of the gimbal and camera effect the battery life.
Equipped with a 3-axis gimbal that does its job well. The gimbal is set up as replaceable, so you can fly with or without. An uncommon feature on advanced drones, it’s easy to swap the gimbal for a preferred model
Flight Simulator App
Another fun feature of the 3DR Solo is its flight simulator app, that can be uploaed to your smart phone or tablet. The quadcopter costs about $1,000, so 3DR highly recommends using the app to practice flying rather than crashing your new drone into a million bits.
Other features included on the 3DR Solo include mobile HD video streaming, autopilot system, wireless firmware and software updates, cinematic flight mode, and computer-assisted flight shots.
