3DR Solo VS DJI Phantom 2
Posted on December 14 2015
The 3DR Solo and the Phantom 2 are two of the personal drones on the market today vying for the title of “best.” The Phantom 2 is from DJI, and while it offers more features than its predecessor, the Phantom 1, it still pales in comparison to its successors, the Phantom 2 Vision, the Phantom 2 Vision+, and the Phantom 3.
3D Robotics’ 3DR Solo is the company’s latest offering. So which is the better drone? Let’s review a few features to help gauge:
Both the 3DR Solo and the Phantom 2 offer stellar batteries with relatively long flight times. The 3DR Solo features a 14.8 V LiPo 5200 mAh battery that the quadcopter “makes efficient use of” thanks to its computer-controlled flight system. The battery provides the 3DR Solo with 25 minutes of flight time without a camera, and 20 minutes with. The Phantom 2’s 5200mAh LiPo battery provides up to 25 minutes of flight time. It also provides battery capacity data, maintenance reminders, and over charge/discharge protection.
The Phantom 2 features an upgraded controller compared to the Phantom 1, and includes a gimbal control dial, built-in rechargeable battery, trainer port, battery level LED indicators, and throttle locking feature. The latter feature holds the throttle stick in place even when the quadcopter is descending. It is also compatible with the Phantom 2 Vision+.
The 3DR Solo’s controller features HDMI output for live HD broadcast, and is the “first drone to wirelessly deliver HD video from your drone GoPro to your iOS or Android device.” Additional controller features include onscreen data, haptic feedback, camera angle adjustment, GPS view, and an adjustable arm that fits “a phone up to the iPad mini.”
Which is the better option? Think about what you want in terms of features and pricing and enjoy your choice!
