The Phantom 4 Is Here!

Posted on March 01 2016

The DJI Phantom 4 has been officially announced, several features and a full view of the aircraft has been released.

So, what do we know?

  • DJI has added obstacle avoidance to the front of the Phantom 4, as well as improved the vision positioning sensor on the underside of the aircraft.
  • The Phantom 4 now has automatic subject tracking at the tap of your smart device.
  • The camera and gimbal unit is now integrated into the aircraft, so no more rubber balls, pins, or cables to rip in a minor crash.
  • The camera now shoots 4K up to 30 frames per second, and 1080p up to 120 frames per second for amazing aerial slow motion shots.
  • The unit now features dual compass modules and dual IMUs for increased reliability.
  • DJI has done away with the matte finish and opted for a polished shell.
  • The motor cans sit higher to help keep propellers out of frame at high speeds.
  • The Phantom 4 will also feature push-and-release propellers.
  • The remote controller will feature an "S" mode, for Speed, with a claimed top speed of 44MPH

The two points above the landing gear are the new obstacle avoidance sensors, which automatically trigger a stopping function at speed when it approaches an object.

The suspension dampening system has been replaced by this integrated camera and gimbal unit.

The completely redesigned battery is supposed to have an industry-leading 28 minute flight time. In addition to that, it appears to be much easier to grip than previous iterations of the Phantom batteries.

The Phantom 4's new object tracking system looks very promising. Tap to designate your subject, and the Phantom 4 automatically follows and keeps that subject in frame.

"Tap to fly" uses just a tap of the finger on your smartphone or tablet to head out in that direction without manual control inputs, and still utilizing its obstacle avoidance feature.

The Phantom 4 also allows users to orbit a moving object automatically. This is a very difficult shot to get, and the Phantom 4 will do it for you.

DJI's transmission system has also received an overhaul, with DJI claiming FPV range of up to 3 miles!

The Phantom 4 will be available to pre-order from Dronefly on March 23, 2016.
