Land Rover and Red Cross: Project Hero

Posted on March 10 2017

We all know that drones and their accompanying technologies have already started changing the world. The "Average" consumer drone operator has access to capture beautiful footage from a new perspective (though to be fair most use it as an extended selfie stick). More than that, though, are the commercial drone solutions: drones that have zooming cameras, thermal cameras, long flight times, the list goes on. These new technologies can be used to enrich people's lives, make dangerous jobs safer, and even save people's lives.

Farmers can use drone technology to quickly and efficiently monitor the health of their crops, as well as use drones to spray water or nutrients onto plants in poor health.

Bridge and wind turbine inspectors that used to have to climb in precarious situations can now send up a drone to get a close view of their subject without putting their lives at risk.

Search and rescue teams can use drones with thermal cameras to make search times much quicker and guide ground personnel to the location of their target, making possible life-or-death rescue missions lean a little more on the side of life.

Land Rover has built a vehicle to lend a hand to rescue/relief workers for use by the Red Cross. They went well beyond just adding a drone system to their Discovery SUV, but that definitely caught our attention. "Project Hero" features a retractable roof-mounted UAV landing system that allows the drone to land back in its place even while the vehicle is in motion.

While the drone is definitely the attention grabber, Land Rover included more special features to their SUV to aid rescue or relief workers. The floor in the rear of the Discovery slides out to make a mobile workstation, and its heavy duty material protects any gear or supplies stored underneath. It is also equipped with power and a range of plug configurations to fit several different regions as well as all the requisite radio gear needed to maintain contact in remote locations.
