Freefly Alta X Gen2: Professional Heavy-Lift Drone With 33 lb Payload Capacity and Enterprise-Grade Autonomous Flight

The Freefly Alta X Gen2 is the evolution of Freefly's most trusted heavy-lift platform — a professional multi-rotor aircraft built for operators who need serious payload capacity, intelligent autonomous flight, and the integration architecture to support complex sensor and data systems in the field.

It carries up to 15.1 kg (33.3 lb) on a proven carbon-fiber airframe with a maximum gross takeoff weight of 34.9 kg, powered by the same custom flight controller and Auterion Enterprise PX4 software stack that drives the Astro Max.

Smart Dovetail quick-connect payload interface, pre-installed 12mm rail mount, dual onboard voltage regulators, an FPV camera, and the Freefly Pilot Pro controller are all included — the Gen2 arrives ready to fly the day it arrives.

Key Features and Benefits

  • 15.1 kg payload capacity: carries heavy sensors, cinema rigs, and multi-payload configurations with stability.
  • Enterprise flight stack: Auterion Enterprise PX4 with autonomous mission planning and fleet management.
  • Smart Dovetail interface: quick-connect integration with Freefly and compatible third-party payloads.
  • Pre-installed 12mm rail mount: supports the full payload capacity out of the box without additional hardware.
  • Internal payload bay: onboard Ethernet, regulated power, and LTE for custom sensor and data integrations.
  • Carbon-fiber Alta X airframe: folding field-deployable design with IP43-equivalent weather resistance.
  • Wide temperature range: operational from -20°C to +50°C for demanding environmental conditions.
  • Dual onboard regulators: 12V and 24V outputs supply clean regulated power to external and internal payloads.
  • Standard Remote ID: pre-installed and FAA compliant for BVLOS mission authorization.
  • Pilot Pro controller: included and preconfigured for Alta X Gen2 with Herelink radio.

What separates the Alta X Gen2 from its predecessor is what it adds behind the payload interface. An internal cargo bay, accessible by removing the chassis panels, supports onboard Ethernet, regulated payload power, and onboard LTE, enabling custom integrations that keep mission data moving without external hardware.

The onboard computer and LTE module connect to Auterion Mission Control for autonomous mission planning and Auterion Suite for cloud-based fleet management, telemetry, and logging across multiple aircraft. Support for both Herelink and Doodle Labs radios gives fleet integrators flexibility across operational and compliance environments, and Standard Remote ID comes pre-installed for FAA compliance and BVLOS authorization.

For solutions partners and fleet operators deploying heavy sensors, cinema systems, or custom payloads at scale, the Alta X Gen2 is the platform that was designed to grow with the mission. Batteries and charger are sold separately.

An Integration Platform Built for Fleet-Level Deployment

For solutions partners and fleet integrators, the Alta X Gen2's value compounds across the system. The internal payload bay's onboard Ethernet and LTE remove the need for external networking hardware on complex sensor integrations, and Auterion Suite's fleet management capability scales across multiple aircraft without per-seat software friction.

The Smart Dovetail interface supports a growing ecosystem of Freefly and third-party payloads, including the Flux LiDAR lineup with a separately sold GNSS Mount, and the 12mm rail system accommodates heavy industrial sensors without custom mounting solutions. The Pilot Pro controller ships preconfigured for the Alta X Gen2 and supports both Herelink and Doodle Labs radios, giving operators a single controller platform across fleet variants.

For organizations building out Alta X Gen2 fleets for inspection corridors, survey programs, or multi-site industrial deployments, the aircraft's integration architecture is as important as its payload number, and the Gen2 delivers both.

What makes the Alta X Gen2 a significant upgrade over the original Alta X?

The Gen2 retains the proven carbon-fiber airframe and heavy-lift capability of the original Alta X and adds the custom flight controller and Auterion Enterprise PX4 software from Astro Max, the Smart Dovetail quick-connect payload interface, an internal cargo bay with onboard Ethernet and regulated payload power, and upgraded smart battery compatibility for improved flight time estimation.

It also adds an onboard LTE module for Auterion Suite fleet management and Auterion Mission Control for autonomous mission planning — capabilities the original Alta X did not support natively. The empty weight is 11.2 kg, 0.13 kg heavier than a similarly equipped Gen1, while maintaining the same 34.9 kg maximum gross takeoff weight.

How does the internal payload bay work and what can it support?

The internal cargo bay is accessed by removing the Alta X Gen2's chassis panels. It supports onboard Ethernet connectivity, regulated payload power, and onboard LTE for remote connectivity, allowing operators to install computing hardware, network switches, or communication modules without external mounting.

This is particularly relevant for complex inspection programs requiring real-time data transmission, autonomous workflows needing onboard edge computing, or remote operations where LTE connectivity is mission-critical. The 12V and 24V onboard regulators supply clean regulated power to both externally mounted and internally installed systems.

What payload and landing gear configurations are available for the Alta X Gen2?

The Alta X Gen2 ships with the 12mm rail kit and Smart Dovetail isolator pre-installed, covering industrial sensor and LiDAR payloads up to 15.1 kg. For cinema or vibration-sensitive payloads such as the Mōvi Pro, a Payload Vibration Damper and Skyview Landing Gear are required and sold separately.

For cargo applications, Cargo Landing Gear and application-specific accessories are available. For Flux LiDAR payload integration, a separately sold GNSS Mount is required. For centimeter-level positioning, an optional RTK GPS Ground Station is available. Dronefly can build a complete payload and landing gear configuration matched to your specific application.

Does the Alta X Gen2 come with batteries and a charger?

No. The Alta X Gen2 ships without batteries or a charger. Freefly recommends at least one pair of Tattu Plus 1.0 12S 16Ah AS150U batteries per aircraft — each flight requires two batteries — and the Tattu TA3200 Dual-Channel Smart Charger for field operations. For operators planning more than three flights without access to field charging,

Freefly recommends one additional battery pair per planned additional flight. Each charger handles two batteries simultaneously, and additional chargers reduce overall field charging time. Dronefly can advise on the right battery and charger configuration for your operational tempo and mission profile.

Is the standard Alta X Gen2 NDAA compliant, and is there an NDAA version available?

The standard Alta X Gen2 (included in this listing) is not fully NDAA compliant. The airframe and Pilot Pro controller are compliant, but the included Herelink radio link is not. A separately available NDAA version replaces the Herelink radio with a Doodle Labs radio link to achieve full system NDAA compliance.

Operators working on federal, defense, or critical infrastructure projects with NDAA requirements should source the NDAA version. Dronefly can advise on which variant is appropriate for your compliance context and procurement requirements.

How does the Alta X Gen2 support fleet-level operations and autonomous missions?

The Alta X Gen2 integrates with Auterion Mission Control for autonomous waypoint and inspection mission planning, and Auterion Suite for cloud-based fleet management, telemetry logging, and aircraft health monitoring across multiple aircraft. The onboard LTE module enables remote connectivity for fleet data without requiring ground-based infrastructure at every site.

Support for both Herelink and Doodle Labs radios allows fleet operators to standardize on a single aircraft platform across standard and NDAA-compliant configurations. Dronefly specializes in multi-aircraft fleet procurement and can advise on scaling Alta X Gen2 deployments across distributed operations.
